Hampstead was Milein Cosman’s home for seventy years. When she moved to London after her studies at the Slade during its wartime evacuation in Oxford, she first lived briefly in lodgings on Christchurch Hill before securing a small studio in Willow Road. In 1955 she and Hans Keller bought their first home together at 50 Willow Road (where a plaque now commemorates them) and in 1967 they moved to Frognal Gardens, where they lived the rest of their lives.
When Milein Cosman died, the Hampstead School of Art inherited her library of art books, together with her easel and palette, and a number of still life objects. In 2021 the School honoured her centenary with a wide-ranging special exhibition, and the Trust is delighted by this year’s new exhibition of her drawings, prints and oil paintings, from the collection of her great friend Julian Hogg, founding chairman of the Trust.
The exhibition is free and continues until 30 November. Further details here. The image on the left shows one of Milein Cosman’s paintings of her husband Hans Keller at their home in Frognal Gardens.
